It was after hearing the piece on the radio that I went back to find the piece and saw the printed article.

With the 10th Anniversary of 9/11 coming up, I caught an interesting piece aired this morning on the local NPR station.
Interesting article about the impact of 9/11 on this generation of military brats and coping. Hard to imagine dealing with a parent having 7 or 8 deployments to Iraq & Afghanistan. The term ”veteran” needs to be understood to include more than just the direct combatants as this group falls within my definition of veteran as well as the dedicated spouses. You can read it at: http://www.wamu.org/news/11/09/07/for_military_children_911_is_a_way_of_life
Thanks for pointing this out, Tim. (You can also listen to the piece by clicking on Play underneath the headline at the link).
The multiple deployments, still going on 10 years after 9/11, is an incredible burden for families of the service men and women – financially and especially emotionally. Yet this burden is being carried almost exclusively by less than 1% of Americans.

Right – I just pointed out the Play for the others.
I’m hanging in there. Want to retire, but not able to yet. It would be nice to travel some out of the country. After reading your ”dispatches” from Europe, however, I’ve ruled out Bosnia.

The NY Times reported the death of a WW2 Medal of Honor recipient (earned in 1944), who remained in the army until 1973 — service during the Korean War and Vietnam.

The Army announced a new (sad) record of suicides (32 total) among active duty army and army reserve personnel during the month of July 2011. I wonder how many Americans take notice of the loss of life from combat, accidental and suicides in our two wars . . .

I’m sitting here (middle of Bosnia–”5” star hotel) and thinking that my current room has no a/c to speak of, a ”shower” without a curtain or anything else to keep the water from spraying all over the bathroom and thinking, well, Gast’s place this weekend will have some amenities I don’t have in this place. Miss seeing you guys this year, have a great time–and hope you get some sleep despite Fred’s night-time serenades.

Great song–how could it have been that long ago??? April 30, ’66, we had moved from Ft. Knox to small town, Ohio, where the family would be in a civilian environment while the old man would be in Vietnam. But, first, he’d spend 2 months at Ft. Bragg before actually heading off to Vietnam in August 66. The ”good times” had really come to an end.

This is a powerful documentary style program that I saw over the weekend. Two different generations within the same families serving. The link is:

Watching the news last evening and the coverage of some of the Memorial Day events, I saw a news piece about a guy who started ”Bugles Across America” to ensure that all veterans have a live bugle player to play Taps, not a recording. His website is: http://www.buglesacrossamerica.org/. Since beginning his effort in 2000, thousands of volunteer buglers have come forward.
Hope everyone had a great holiday weekend.

History repeats itself with Iraq war veterans suffering PTSD, some bad cases. The link takes you to the story of one guy and his internal battles. It’s a multi-part story written by a journalist who was embedded with the unit. http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2011/war.at.home/part1/index.html

Paul,
Thanks. We all got dropped into the same forest, but had to follow different paths . . . . I feel like I finally returned to familiar ground and thanks to you and all the other B2-7 guys, I’m glad to be ”home”.

Parallel Worlds Intersect The sound was different, distant, but looking up, the fighter jet, low and fast streaked over the rooftops followed a few seconds later by its screaming sound. Then, the pilot triggered the underwing ordnance that streaked ahead to some unseen distant target . . . It could have been the summer of [...]

Looking at the calendar, it reminds me that 41 years ago today a shooting occurred on the campus of a large Ohio university: Kent State (I attended KSU ’75-’78 after getting out of the Army). What is interesting today is that as I think about men of our general age range whom I’ve met, it would seem that we are all carrying something from those years. I’ve met men who tried to enlist and wanted to go to Vietnam, but were unable to pass their physicals, or others who were inducted, then separated from service due to physical problems and they seem to carry the weight of not having gone to Vietnam. So, as I think about today on the calendar, and regardless what one thinks about what happened on May 4, 1970, perhaps the reality is that there is a whole generation that carries with it the burden of Vietnam, even when many never left their home towns during that period.
